Young People Need a New Deal: How different can Manchester be?

Manchester is a paradox, it has one the fastest-growing economies in Europe, and one of the highest child poverty rates in the U.K. with 48% of all children and young people living in poverty.

We have seen this trend before, London, New York, and Toronto – are all economic powerhouses that are not distributing the gains equitably or inclusively. In Manchester, it is not too late to change this. Our history is one of radical thought and ideas, let us live up to our history and change our path.

Every child and young person deserve the right to access outstanding opportunities and joyful lives. We believe a radical change is needed to deliver inclusive growth and support young people in taking ownership of their economy. We believe every young person should be able to take advantage of the vast economic opportunities in one of Europe’s fastest growing economies.

The question of how this looks remains and we need your help. In 2017, Young Manchester began with a mission to create a Manchester in which every child and young person has access to outstanding and enriching opportunities. Since then, we have shared power and space with young people through youth-led grant making. We have actively shared wealth with communities and supported young people to fund their communities through £8.5 million in grants. Since then, we have been industry leaders and supported other organisations to adopt youth-led grant making.

However, with growing economic inequality and inequitable systems cementing, now is the time for change. We want to explore what going beyond sharing power and space with children and young people may look like. What do young people organically holding power look like? Through this, we hope to one day empower and resource young people to create their own supportive space in which they hold power and wealth.

We actively want to work with young people, youth organisations and local businesses on this journey as partners on our journey in exploring what an inclusive economy can look like for children and young people.

Please get in touch and join us as we embark on this journey!

We are very interested to hear from:

  • Local businesses
  • Young People
  • Young Leaders
  • Youth Organisations
  • Organisations working on Community Wealth.

Please reach out to Hasaan via email H.amin@youngmanchester.org or Samuel S.remi-akinwale@youngmanchester.org if you would like to discuss joining us on this journey or learn more about this.
